Time seems to go by faster and faster, every year seemingly speeding up on us. We try to hang on but as we all know, that just isn’t possible. Some day, when we’re old and gray and these days are only memories, having something tangible to hold and cherish will be priceless. If that thing is pictures of family members long passed on, or of your children as babies, I can’t imagine anything I’d treasure more. An annual photo session is a great way to document your family and children’s growth, while creating memories together. Having a senior is a HUGE milestone, and totally worth the time and expense of a senior session. I mean, how many times will they be graduating, entering the world to begin this journey? ONCE, that’s right. Milestone sessions can help tell their story, showing all the changes they go through from toddler-to that smelly teen who’s currently hiding in their room.
Our portraits are part of our story, the legacy we leave behind. They deserve so much better than sitting on some computer or hard drive, deteriorating with each passing year or worse, lost to the downfalls of technology: unrecoverable.
Story Time!
Growing up, family photos were not something we did. Honestly, I think we may have had 3-4 professional photo sessions my entire childhood. It just wasn’t a priority back then to my parents, they didn’t know any better.
As a young child, I was blessed with both sets of grandparents and great grandparents to help raise me up right. I didn’t know how rare that was until I got a little older. In my short 31 years, I have experienced many losses, and the pain of having very little to share with my own children from these people who shaped me weighs heavy on my mind.
Looking back through my own pictures, I am saddened because I have virtually nothing to show my daughters with their mom. I was always too worried about how “horrible” I looked to take pictures, something I learned from watching and listening to the adults around me. I have very little to show my children, including pictures from my own childhood. A few family portraits, but no photos on the walls growing up. The only images I have are the mental pictures locked inside my mind, and they will die with me. We used to have lots of digital files, but technology was technology. We lost it all when our computer crashed when I was in high school.
These experiences have given me the mindset I have today, which is soak up every moment you can, and document the moments you want to hold onto. Don’t let insecurity or fear keep you from showing up in your own life.
Documenting and preserving your memories, the moments you can’t get back, is so important. I wish I would have known then, what I do today. I implemented yearly portraits for my own family, complete with an heirloom album, and portraits for my walls, ensuring my family has these moments to look back on, for generations to come.
